Bridges

Today we made bridges with marshmallows and spaghetti.  The bridges have to go across a gap and be strong.  We looked at pictures of bridges for ideas of what shapes to use. It was hard to make them becuase the spagetti broke easily. Tomorrow we are going to test them with a small medium and big billy goat gruff to see if our bridges will hold them up.
We started a new tracking page for our Daily 5.  In work on writing we are writing a book giving our advice to different characters from fairy tale stories.  One was a letter to Cinderella to give her ideas on how she can not be sad anymore.  We read another book about a boy Cinderella and his fairy godmother turned him into a monkey by accident.  At midnight he ran away like the in other stories but in this story he lost his pants!
In math we read a book about Guinea pigs. As Ms. Mahan read the book we wrote the equation that matched the words on our whiteboard.  The number kept getting smaller.  We practiced more subtracting on our whiteboards and with pictures.  We even made up our own subtracting problem.

Kindness Search

Today we showed the class the puppet pay that we wrote.  They were really good.  If one of our group members was away we are going to do ours on Monday.
We finished lots of job like our skip counting webs, super hero tower and our skip counting apples.   We also worked on things like our beanstalk and our changes writing from yesterday.
We had an assembly.  It was about being kind.  At the end we had to look for clues to try to find the right classroom.  The clues were hard.

Jumping Ropes

Today in gym we played with the skipping ropes.  We were trying to jump it and walk with it.  Some of us could do it but  it was hard.
In Science we showed the class our vehicles that could carry Cinderella from her house to the ball.  It was hard to build them.  We learned that it is important to spend time building the big rocks and less time on the decorating because lots of our wheels would not turn.  We also learned important to make a plan first and to choose our supplies carefully.   We are bringing them home to show our parents tonight.
We made a new bean home.  Most of used paper towel and got it wet because we learned last time that that make a good bean home.

Bean Art

Today we read a book about Cindy Ellen.  It was like a Cinderlla story but it took place in the wild west .  They had a rodeo and square dance instead of a ball.  We read another about a Cinderella and a Prince that liked running in bare feet and climbing trees.  At the end of that story instead of getting married they ran off in a hot air balloon.
Tomorrow we are building a vehicle that  could carry a Cinderella from her house to the ball.   It has to have wheels and a place to hold Cinderella. We will build it at school but Ms. Mahan told us today in case we want to think about it tonight.
At the end of the day we made our bean art.  We added the right colour beans to make the art 3-D instead of 2-D.  When we were done we put it in a pan and put it in our desk.  We had to had to try fill up the whole paper with beans.  Tomorrow we are going to cover our art with dirt and see if it will grow.  We also opened a bean  to see what is inside.  Some of the parts were the seed coat, the root, leaves and the food.  At the end we labelled a picture with the right words.
In math we started talking about subtraction.  We used blocks and whiteboards.  We talked about the different names for subtracting like minus,  subtract and take away.

Happy Earth Day

Today is Earth Day so we went on a lake walk and picked up garbage.  Went slow so we could look carefully for all the pieces of garbage.  We also picked up garbage around our playground.
In gym we played tail tag.  We put a pinny in our pocket and then we tried to both protect our tail but also steal tails from other people.  We also played french fry tag.  If you got tagged you have to do 5 push ups with someone mirroring you.
We looked at our bean homes today and then we taped our bean in our journals and wrote about them.  Some of our homes stunk!  The most successful bean home was the wet paper towel.  His bean seed had sprouted.  Next week we will make a new bean home.

Robert Munsch Plays

Today we had a special assembly.  Some kids form the High School came to put on a few plays about Robert Munsch books.  One of the plays was about Stephanie's Ponytail, another was about Mortimia and the other was about The Paper Bag Princess.  All of them asked us to help them and were very funny.
We had some catch-up and one of our jobs was to write down 4 things that happened in one of the Jack and the bean stalk stories that we read.  We also finished our signs about what is good about synergizing and our giant by painting the background.

Homes for a Bean

Today we read a book about Jack and the Giant.  Jack traded his cow for some magic beans.  His mom was mad that she threw them out the window and they turned into a beanstalk.  Jack climbed it and found a castle at the top.  We practiced drawing a giant.  We colored him with pencil crayon or crayon and tomorrow we will paint the background.
Today we made a bean home.  We made them with bean seed and a plastic bag. Some of us used dirt, lots of us used water and some of us used rocks in the home.  We also made a castle on a skewer to see if our bean can grow up to the castle.
In math on we worked on whiteboards.  We practiced making big numbers by counting by 10s and then adding on.  We also used blocks to make the number.  In Science we shared our puppets with the rest of the class.  We showed what part moved and we learned that a brass fasteners are good for making things move.
