Animal Reports

Today in Social we started working on an activity where we drew ourselves and on the bottom part we drew our family because these are gtoups that we belong to.
In Science we used the IPads and we used an app to make a slide show about the animal that we researched last week.  We put in pictures to match the facts that we found about those animals.  We also typed our facts in the slides.  We needed to put 1 slide in for each of the areas we found fact on like looks, family, habitat, and food.  When we had 10 slide we were leaders for other people.
In math we tried to estimate to see how many whiteboards it would take to cover the carpet.  We counted that it was 63!  Then we tried to cover the carpet with newspapers.

Today in literacy we practiced our typing buy going on the computers and typing out our I wish poems.  We read another story about Dandilions.  In the story the Sparrow was friends with a Dandelion.  Then a storm came and knocked all of the Dandelions seeds off.  At the end of the story the first dandelion was gone but the seeds turned into 10 new yellow dandelions.
In math we worked with a partner to try and cover out whole whitebaord with different things.  We learned that if you are covering it with things like cards that are small it took lots like close to 16.  If you used big things like paper it only took 2 to cover it.
In Science we went to Mrs. Saundersons class to show them our animal reports that we made yesterday on the iPads.  When we were done they gave us two compliments.
Tomorrow is Library Day.

Animal Research

Today in science we were working on our animal research of the animal that we choose.  We did the research by looking for important information in a good fit book.  We wrote the important information on a piece of paper and then we put it in an envelope.  The envelopes say things like habitat, food, what they look like, family and extra facts.  Ms. Mahan showed us how to get facts from a book about Bison.
In Literacy we did a new kind of activity where we had to listen carefully to what Ms. Mahan said and then colour in the box that matched the words we heard.  There were three parts so we took some breaks  At the end we did a part by reading it on our own and answring the questions.  
Tomorrow we need to wear our Bronco shirt for Synergy Day

Is it Living?


Today we did collages on the IPads about living and non living things.  We know non-living things can't move eat drink and grow.  Living things can.  In Daily 5 we worked on non-fiction books.  We looked for things like table of contents, maps and pictures with labels in animal books.  If the book had those things we checked them off on our checklist.
In math Ms Mahan read a story and we did the math that matched the words in the story.  There were characters like a granny, a cat, a mouse and a flea in the story.  They all went to sleep and then the flea woke them all up.
In Library we read a book about a character called Bella who visited London.   The book taught us about the food they eat their like fish.  In Social we made a map of Alberta and then we put an arrow to where in Alberta we live.  We looked at a map on the computer to help us.

What is Living?


Today we made some art with birds on it.  They were inspired by a famous artist called James Rizzi.  The birds needed to be different sizes and different colours.  At the end of the day we painted the background.  Today most of us finished our fairy tale video.  We made a picture to match each page and then we read our page into the Ipad.
We started talking about living and non living things today in Science. Our new unit in Science is about needs of plants and animals.  We did an activity on the Smartboard to help us learn the difference. In literacy we started looking non fiction books and looking at things that make them different from fiction books.

How do we Show Emotions

Emoji Today we read a book about the 3 little wolves and the big bad pig.  The wolves made houses out of concrete and brick and the big bad pig blew them up.  At the end they made a house out of flower and instead of blowing it up he spelled the flower and realized how mean he had been and decided to be nice.
Today we went to Mrs, Saunderson's room to do Zones.  We watched a little bit of a video so we could see how their faces showed feelings.  In gym we did some more skipping.  We did the bell and we skipped backwards.  Some of us thought it was hard.
In Science we made a plan about how we are going to build our 3 little pigs house tomorrow.  We drew a picture of it and wrote all the materials we are going to use for it.  In library we watched a book flix about a book called Duck on Bike.  It was a fiction book and it had animals that talked in it.

Seedlings for Arbour Day

Today we got a tree to take home.  It is in the side pocket of our backpacks.  We are supposed to give them water and plant it as soon as we get home. The bag told us to plant them 15cm into the ground.   It is for Arbour Day and the government gave them to us.
In math we were doing some more subtracting.  We had to decided if it was a subtracting or adding problem based on what the words in the problem said.  We were using ten frames to help us today.
In literacy we wrote the first page of our fairy tale.  We wrote about the setting, the charachters and the problem today.   Our fairy tales all started with "once upon a time", have magic and have good characters and bad characters.
In gym we were playing animal tag.  Mrs. Welch told us what animal we had to be.  The taggers were the same animal.  When the whistle blew we had to go into an egg and when we got tagged we went into an egg.  In music we got to play the drums and we listened to some music.  We were allowed to experiment playing the drums however we wanted.  In Social we read books about first nations people with partners.

The Big Bad Blow Dryer is Coming...

Chattanooga - Lookout Mountain - Rock City - Fairyland Caverns - Mother Goose Village - 3 Little Pigs We had lots of kids away today so our schedule looked a bit different.
We read 2 stories about the 3 little pigs.  There was a wolf that tried to blow their houses down in both stories. He blew down the first little pig and second little pigs house but not the last one because it was made of bricks.   We talked about fairy tales because this week we are going to write our own fairy tale.  In Science we got a blue note about the big bad blow dryer coming to our class on Friday.  
In Math we practiced figuring out haw many things were under a hand by using subtraction and then we did some mathletics.  In gym we tried a few new ways to swing the skipping rope.  One way was we tried jump with 2 kids in the same rope.  It was hard.
Ms. Mahan gave us back our stuff from April with an orange note for our parents.  We put our favourite thing in the basket to go in our frame on the wall.

Farmer Fields


Today we looked at pictures of what High River looked like in the past.  They used horses to move around. After that we did an art project to make a farmers field.   We coloured each section a different colour by mixing colours with chalk pastels.  We only used green, yellow, orange and brown because those are the colour we saw in the pictures of farmers fields.  
In math, 3 leaders from our class showed us two new math centers.  While they were learning about the centers some other kids were playing a game where we had to flip over a card and then say I wish I had a different number.  He other partner had to give them enough blocks to make that number.
In daily 5 we finished the big rocks that we have been working on all week.  Most of us got them all done.

Zones


In science we tested our bridges between two desks.   The small billy goat was an eraser, the medium billy goat was a pencil case and the big billy goat was a box .  We learned that if our bridges had lots of noodles or were wider they were stronger.  Two peoples bridges could hold the big billy goat!
In daily 5 some of us went a retold our favorite Cinderella stories with an Ipad.  Some of us did language arts centers to work with words and some of us worked on writing by giving our advise to the fairy tale characters.
We went to Mrs. Saunderson's class and we learned about Zones of Self Regulation this afternoon. In library we read a book about a boy who had a bad day and he wanted to move to Australia.  It was because someone in his family got a the prize and he only got cereal.

Subtracting

Today in music we watched a music show that taught us about low, middle and high singing.  We did the dance moves that the man on the video told us to do.  The video had lots of songs that we loved on it.
In Science we covered our bean art with dirt outside.  Now we will see if they grow.   While were not doing our bean art we got to play on the new playground.  In gym we got to choose if we wanted to do skipping basketball or tennis.  No one picked Tennis but lots of us choose to skip.
We read another book about subtracting which means you take stuff away.  When Ms. Mahan read the pages we read it we did the equation that matched the words.
We worked something secret for Mother's day because Mother's Day is this Sunday.

Bridges

pasta2 Today we made bridges with marshmallows and spaghetti.  The bridges have to go across a gap and be strong.  We looked at pictures of bridges for ideas of what shapes to use. It was hard to make them becuase the spagetti broke easily. Tomorrow we are going to test them with a small medium and big billy goat gruff to see if our bridges will hold them up.
We started a new tracking page for our Daily 5.  In work on writing we are writing a book giving our advice to different characters from fairy tale stories.  One was a letter to Cinderella to give her ideas on how she can not be sad anymore.  We read another book about a boy Cinderella and his fairy godmother turned him into a monkey by accident.  At midnight he ran away like the in other stories but in this story he lost his pants!
In math we read a book about Guinea pigs. As Ms. Mahan read the book we wrote the equation that matched the words on our whiteboard.  The number kept getting smaller.  We practiced more subtracting on our whiteboards and with pictures.  We even made up our own subtracting problem.
