Today we made a Haiku Deck about why we need plants and animals, why plants need animals and why amials need plants.  Some of us wrote things like we need plants to make clean air for us to breath.  Birds need trees so they have a place to build thier homes and a place to get their food.
Today was also extra recess so we got to go out early.  Some of us played soccer, some played on the swings and some us us even finished out work outside.

The Rodeo is Coming!

Cowgirl
We went to the gym and had an assembly this morning.Three cowgirls came to tell us about the rodeo in High River this weekend.  One girl showed us how to use a whip.
We had a picnic at the new park that is down from Senator Riley.  The park there was made out of wood.  We walked there and ate our lunch. We also had an extra snack when we got back because we were tired and hungry.
Today was our last day of Zone.  We each got a certificate to say we completed Zones and we got a stop light for our classroom to remind us to STOP when we are in the red zone.
In Sceince we wrote about our "wild me" we created yesterday.  We wrote about why we choose the animals adaptations on our animals.  We wrote things like:

  • I picked a lion mane because I think it would make me look fierce.
  • I chose crab claws so I can pinch my enemies and then get away.
  • I chose spider legs so I would be good at climbing things

We popped balloon number 5 today and tomorrow Grade, 1,2 and 3's get to have an extra recess!

Wild Me!

In PE today we had a guest teacher called Mr. Middleton.  He had us do centers like scooters, scoops and skipping.  In music Mrs. Haney-Jones also had a guest teacher called Miss Metcaff.  They were both actually a student from our school who won being guest teacher for a day at the dinner theatre last week.
We watched a video about what animals need.  We learned they need food, water, air and shelter.  We made a flip book about all of these things.  We also leaned about Animal adaptations an made a wild us on the computer.
We popped the balloon and learned that tomorrow will be Picnic Day!  If it is nice out we will go for a walk for our picnic.  If it is raining we will just stay here.  Parent can come too if they want to.

Bee Bots

Beebot in the wild

Today we used the "Bee Bots".  We practice putting in all the directions for where we wanted them to go.  They could go lots of different places and they could even turn and go backwards.  They were lots of fun.  Some of us got yearbooks in our backpacks today.
We popped balloon number 7 because we have 7 days of school left.  It told us tomorrow is bubble gum day and we get to chew it all day.  Ms. Mahan will bring us each a piece but we are allowed to bring our own gum from home too if we want.

Sidewalk Chalk Day

Campfire
Today in music we sang campfire songs that were silly!  We also listened to some songs like "Canada in my Pocket" and sang along.  We also watched a video about the man who wrote that "Canada in my Pocket".
Today was chalk day so we went out side and wrote bucket filling messages and drew pictures on the the path. In gym we went outside and taught Mrs. Saundersons class how to play soccer.  We played very nicely together.
We wrapped our fathers day present in a bag and put it in our backpack so they are ready to give to our dads on Sunday.  We did old fashion centers like marbles, bottons, tea set and blocks at the end of the day.  We made up our own game and played them together.
We popped the 8th balloon and inside it it said that Monday is No Shoe days!  We have to wear socks though so we don't get dirty feel.

Board Game Day!

Today we worked on our card and our present for our dad.  We will finish them tomorrow so they are ready to take home and give to him on Sunday.  We did a building challenge and worked in teams to try to build the tallest tower in half an hour.  We worked with 3 other people and it was hard.  One group won because they put a flag on top of theirs and the other group did not.
We got to go to the gym after lunch and watch the practice for the dinner theater.  There were cowboys and cowgirls in it.  They have 300 people coming to watch them tonight.  It was board game day and lots of kids brought games.  We synergized very nicely and got to try out lots of different games.  It was really fun.
Today we popped the number 9 balloon and we found out tomorrow is side walk chalk day.  Ms. Mahan has chalk we can use but we can bring our own from home if we want.

New Plants!

When we got here this morning there were some new plants! There was also a card from the Grade 4/5 saying they were sorry to hear about our plants.  They gave us radishes because they heard out bean art blew away.  It really filled our bucket.
Today we read a book about Miss Maple who took care of little seeds.  At the end of the story she set them free because they were big enough to go in the wild and grow into plants. We also watched a video about seeds and plants.
In gym we  learned some of the rules of  soccer and then we played soccer for a while.  One of the rules is that you can not touch the ball unless you are the goalie.  We all had lots of fun

Heritage Park

Heritage Park, Calgary
Today we went on  field trip to Heritage Park. We had lots of fun!
We went on a scavenger hunt for lots of things that showed us what life was like in the past.  We learned that in the past they used to make cool stuff out of steel by putting it in coal and fire to make it hot and then they used a hammer.  They even made metal roses at the blacksmith shop!
We learned that they did not have cars so they had to walk or they used horses to pull wagon.  The horses that pulled the stuff were bigger than normal horses.
Some of the houses in the past were small but some of the others were bigger.  There were dolls and mannequins in some of the rooms but they looked every old.  The kitchen was very small and it had a special stove that you had to light a fire in to make it hot.  We also saw some other stoves that used natural gas or coal.   They used to have to pull a lever to make the toilet flush and the bathrooms were very small.
The hospital only had two rooms and was much smaller than our hospital.  Their gas pumps were also different.  They were different shape and you would have to pull a special thing to make the gas come out.  You couldn't pay at the pump like we do now.  The telephones are not the same as ours. They had chords they put into a different parts so they could connect to the right person.

How much will it hold?

glass jar
Today we had an assembly and the Grade 6 band came for Senator Riley. They showed us how some on the instruments work and how you play them.
In math we learned that not all containers hold the same amount.  We filled smaller containers with rocks and dumped them into the bigger container to see which would hold more.  The big word for how much it will hold is called capacity. We learned that sometimes fatter things can hold more than tall things.
Today in zones we learned about small problem and big problems.  We blew up balloons for the size of the problem we learned that not all problems are the same size.

Circle Stories

Parrots Today in reading we read a book called" If you give a moose a muffin".  He did lots of stuff in the story at the end of the story he asked for another muffin.  The story started and ended the same way sop we called it a circle story.  After we read the story we we wrote a circle story together.  It was about giving a parrot a cracker.  Then we each started our own story in our journal.
In music we sang some fun songs with actions.  One was about a swimming pool where we did actions and then we tried to leave out lots of the words while we sang the song in our heads.  We had music in our room because the music room was too hot.
We made a Haiku Deck with the IPads about the first nation people and how thier lives were different from our lives.  We also finished our dandelion art by putting the white part on our dandelion and now they are hanging on the wall in our class.  Some parts of the dandelion looked like they were blowing away.

Monday 6 June 2016

Which is heavier?

Scales

In Social we learned about first nation people and we leaned that they have special pow wow clothes that they wore to have dances.  We also learned that they ate every part of the buffalo and they ate berries.
In math we did measuring of weight.  We put different things on the two sides of a balance scale.  The thing that is heavier go down and the lighter things go up.  If they were the same weight they neither of the sides touch the bottom they both stayed in the middle.
In art we took a picture of the side of our head and then we glued it on a big piece of paper. We glued our "I wish" writing to the bottom of the paper.  Then we used pastel to draw the green stem and the center of the dandelion.  Tomorrow we are going to draw the white part of the dandelion.

Sheppard Family Park

Today we had a field trip to Sheppard Family Park.    We walked there and back and had Grade 1 in the school there.  We learned that the school was built in 1904.  There was no water fountain there so we had to pack extra water bottles. It also did not have a bathroom so kids used an outhouse for a bathroom.
The teachers checked our fingernails to make sure they were clean at the beginning of the day.  If our fingers were dirty we would have had to go wash our hands again in the basin in the boot room.
We learned that if we were bad they would take the belt out and slap their hands. They had different sizes of desks because every single grades from grade 1 to grade 8 were in the same room.   Even the library and the music room were in that same room.  The desks had holes in them because sometimes they used ink and a tip on a pen to write.
We did some math equations on our chalk boards that we copied form the teachers chalkboard and we did printing practice because they had very neat printing. We also had a spelling bee and did math drills.
We went on a tour and we saw the root cellar which is where they stored their food.  It smelled bad because there were no air vents. We ate our lunches outside and played some recess games like gunny sack races and tug of  war.  It was a fun day.
