Sheppard Family Park

Today we had a field trip to Sheppard Family Park.    We walked there and back and had Grade 1 in the school there.  We learned that the school was built in 1904.  There was no water fountain there so we had to pack extra water bottles. It also did not have a bathroom so kids used an outhouse for a bathroom.
The teachers checked our fingernails to make sure they were clean at the beginning of the day.  If our fingers were dirty we would have had to go wash our hands again in the basin in the boot room.
We learned that if we were bad they would take the belt out and slap their hands. They had different sizes of desks because every single grades from grade 1 to grade 8 were in the same room.   Even the library and the music room were in that same room.  The desks had holes in them because sometimes they used ink and a tip on a pen to write.
We did some math equations on our chalk boards that we copied form the teachers chalkboard and we did printing practice because they had very neat printing. We also had a spelling bee and did math drills.
We went on a tour and we saw the root cellar which is where they stored their food.  It smelled bad because there were no air vents. We ate our lunches outside and played some recess games like gunny sack races and tug of  war.  It was a fun day.
