Canon
Today we practiced making patterns in different ways this is called translating a patterns.  We practiced translating patterns on our whiteboards with a partners and then we translated our crown patterns in 2 ways.  When we were done we cut it out so it looked like a crown.  Most of us are wearing them home today.   We also made our pattern paintings into flowers in groups.  They look beautiful.
In science we were using rulers, magnets and paper clips to see how far the paper clip would jump to to get to the magnet.  We had to graph how many cm it could jump.
Monday is Picture day!

Terry Fox

Terry Fox Statue, Wellington St, Ottawa (491753)
Today we read a book about Terry Fox.  We found out Terry Fox started his run in Newfoundland and ended his run in Ontario.  It also told us Terry Fox lost a leg because his knee was feeling pain and it turned out to be cancer.   In daily 5 we wrote sentences about what we knew about Terry Fox and then we drew a picture.  Some of the Grade 2's had so much to write they needed to write on the back of the page.  At the end of the day we did your Terry Fox run around the lake.
In Science we tested how many paper clips each of the different kinds of magnets will hold.  In math we practiced sorting by two things at the same time.  It was a new way of sorting for us.
Tomorrow we are having our special magnet learning day!

We Have Fantastic Elastic Brains

Brain
Today we watched a video about magnets and learned that the earth is a big magnet.  They also taught us a magic trick on the video. After the video we drew 8 boxes in our visual journal and then we answered some questions about magnets in the boxes. We wrote and drew pictures about what we learned form the video.
In daily 5 we had 3 choices today.  We could do listening to reading, work on writing or read to self.  We read our class book of "It is not a stick".  We each made a page in the book.
We read another book called the Fantastic Elastic Brain. We learned that when we learn things are brain bets stronger.  We also learned that our brain controls everything we do.  Some of the parts of our brain are the cerebellum, cerebrum and the hippocampus.

After we labelled hills, mountains, prairies and river in our art.
We read the book that was like the book it is not a stick but this time it was not a box.  After we made our own page for our class book of it is not a stick.  We read another story about making friends about a new boy called peanut butter.  It was hard for him to make friends but he kept trying.  At the end everyone wanted to play with him because he and jelly because they were having so much fun.

Today we took a picture of ourselves with a stick so we can make a class book like the book "it is not a stick".  We also added some ideas coming out of our head in our visual journal that we started yesterday.  The grade 2's could write and draw their ideas and the grade 1's just drew pictures of their ideas.
Tomorrow we have an assembly, book orders are due and we have the meet the teacher BBQ.

What Do You Do With An Idea?

ideas
Today we drew a picture of ourselves then we cut the top of the head off and glued them in our visual journals. so  Now it looks like our head is opening.  We read a book about what to do with an idea.  The boy in the story went on an adventure with his idea.    People laughed at his idea and told him it was a waste of time but he kept believing and soon his idea went everywhere.  Tomorrow we are going to draw our ideas coming out of our heads.
We read a book about what you can see hidden in a picture and there was lots of animals hidden in the picture.  We were practicing reading the pictures. We really liked the book.  We also read a book where we guessed what things were from clues.  The pictures in the book were close up of things in our house like Velcro.  We read another story where we had to guess the animals based on what rhymed with the clue.
Today we made patterns in our visual journals.  They could be color patterns or  line patterns.

Drawing "Ish"-ly

painter 201407
In morning meeting the question was "Do bunnies have good eye sight?"  Most of us thought they did.  After we read that carrots can give you good eyesight and Ms. Mahan gave us each a carrot from her garden.
Today we made it to  9 minutes during Read to Self!  That s the longest we have ever read.   We also read a book called "Ish" about a boy who like to draw.  He drew things "ish"-ly.  After the book was done we made "ish" pictures just like he did.
In the afternoon we had an assembly and we talked about leadership teams and the 7 habits.  Some of the leadership teams this year are morning DJ's, gardening leaders, share a smile leaders and recycling leaders.

Frosty Morning.

Today our morning question was "What are frost flowers?"  We all told what we thought they were and then we went outside to look for frost flowers.  We found lots in the shade.  We learned after that they are made from ice that is why they melt in the sun.  When we were done we got to play outside for a few minutes.
We did a letter center with our groups this morning.  When we were done we were the leaders and showed the rest of the class how to do the center.  The centers were about practicing our letter sounds.
Today we traced magnets in our visual journal and learned the different magnet names.  When we were done we painted around the outside of each magnet.

Sky Colour

sky
Today we had a birthday in the class so we got to have birthday cupcakes!  We read a book about a girl who was an artist and her class was painting a mural.  They each got to paint part of the mural.  She decided to do the sky.  She could not find blue paint so she made a new colour for the sky because she noticed that the sky can be lots of different colours.
We read another book about a girl who never made mistakes and her first mistake was juggling a pepper shaker (instead of a salt shaker) and it made her hamster sneeze.  We learned that mistakes are OK because she had more fun after she made the mistake. We also finished our 4 math pattern centers.

Patterns everywhere!

Knitted rainbow
Today talked about patterns in Math. We rotated through 4 math centers. At one center we made pattern bracelets out of beads and pipe cleaners. Grade 2's used 3,4 or 5 colours in their bracelet and Grade 1 used 2 or 3 colours. Another Center was making a pattern paper chains. Another was making a pattern art. The grade 2's even learned about a new kind of pattern called a growing or increasing pattern! We read a book about girl who fond a box of yarn so she knit a sweater for herself. She had more yarn leftover so she knit sweaters for animals and houses in her town. Then a Duke stole her box of yarn but when the duke opened the box there was nothing in it. We had gym today and we played colour tag. If the teacher said the colour of pinnies you were wearing you were it.

What we are

Today we watched a video about "What I Am".  It said things like "What I am is helpful or "What I am is strong".  Then we each made a Lego person of ourselves and wrote a sentence about what we are.
We read a book about how a girl was going to get to school this year.  Then we wrote a sentence about how we get to school. After we created a how we wish we could get to school out of Lego, Knex or square blocks. People made things like snakes, cats and giraffes.
We got two gyms because the gym was empty when we went on our school tour!  We did calendar and talked about the months and when our birthday is. We also talked about how today is Friday and about not having school for 3 days.  Have a great Long weekend everyone!
