Leap Day

Today we were writing about leap year.  We know leap year only happens every 4 years so it will not happen again until 2020.
Today we coloured in 4 more spots on our 100 books heart.  We are each doing home reading and for every book we read we colour in a square.  We supposed to read 7 books so we can fill the whole heart.  When we get to 100 scholastic will donate some books to a school that does not have a class library.  We are at 16 square coloured in right now.
Today we worked on our books and did box 5 and 6. In box 5 our characters tried to solve the problem one more time but it didn't work and in box 6 they finally solved the problem.  We used our supplies to build our Barbie furniture. Only 2 kids finished their so we will have to spend some more time building tomorrow.  It was harder than we thought it might be.
Today we drew a penguin and under it we wrote 3 sentences .  We did it today because our playground was so slippery.

Drawing Quails

This morning we drew a quail and then we wrote some sentences about it.  Ms. Mahan told us the steps to draw  it.  It had a curl on the top of its head.  We also read a story about a girl that had a special bunny and a friend in her class had the same bunny.  The book was unique because the background was real picture and the characters with cartoons.
We did two daily 5's again today.  Some of us could not do listening to reading because we did not have headphones so we are going to ask our parents for headphones this weekend.
This afternoon we made a kite with a number under 20 on it.  We colored it with felts and then we painted it with baby oil to make it see through.  We talked about what we want to make out Barbie furniture out of on Monday. Some kids wanted materials that Ms. Mahan does not have so we have a sticky in our black folders to ask our moms and dads if we have that material at home. We are not supposed to spend any money on it if we don't have it!

Where is Canada?

 Today was the 102 day of school. Today in math we used blocks to practice adding.  We used 2 colours and then we connected the blocks together.  We tried to make the number Ms. Mahan said in different ways.  After we made an the adding sentence that matched our blocks.
In science we watched a video about why summer comes.  We know that it is because the earth is always moving around the sun.  When the earth is tilting away from the sun it is winter when we are tilting towards the sun it is summer.
We added a new thing to our daily 5 options today.  It was listening to reading.  We listen to reading on Raz Kids.  Now we can choose listened to reading, read to self or work on writing.
In social we talked about maps and how they show us things.  We talked about Canada and how we can find on a map.  We know Canada has blue in the middle and it has islands at the top.  Sometimes it even says Canada at the top of the page when your looking in an Atlas.

Pink Shirt Day

Today was the 101st day of school. We finish our activities from yesterday like our 100 number pictures and our 100 hats.  We also wrote about what we think our life will be like when we are 100.
We made fruit-loop necklaces.  First put the fruit-loops on a 100 chart and then we put them on a string.   After we made the 100 chart into  puzzle and ate the necklaces.
In the gym we played a 100 game.  We had to run to the wall and see how many times we could do an activity in 100 seconds
Today we wore pink shirts to stand for not being a bully. It was also crazy hat day.

100 day!

Today was 100 day.  Some of us dressed up and and we got a treat that said congratulations on being 100 days smarter. We made 100 hats by putting 10 strips of paper on the hats and then put 10 stickers or bingo dobs on each strip of paper.  We also made pictures of that we think we will look like when we are 100 years old.
Tomorrow is another fun day.  We have pink shirt and crazy hat  day.

100 day tomorrow!

Today we did two Daily 5's and we got to pick which one we wanted to do first.  If we did  read to self first then the second time we did work on writing or the other way around.  We loved having a choice. We read 2 Mo Willems books.  One was about a pig and an elephant. The elephant had two birds that built a nest on his head.  We read another Mo Williams book about Edwina.   We also started writing our own book we only wrote 2 pages so far.

We did a KWL chart for our new unit in science about building things.  The K was for what we know and the W is for what we want to learn.  In gym we practiced passing and dribbling the basketball in different ways. 

Tomorrow is 100 day.  We need to bring 100 of something and dress up.  

Mystery Reader

Today we had a special mystery reader.  Before she came we got 5 clues about her and one was that she drives a truck with lights and another was that she visits our school often.  She was a police officer. Her name was Constable Jill. She read us a book about the RCMP.  The book showed us the badges and police dogs.
Today we finished our senses Mr. Potatoehead and then we wrote clues about where we were going to hide it in the school.  Later we read our clues to a partner and they had to try to find where our Mr. Potatoe head was hiding in the school.

Special Visit

Today we had a special visitor come and read to us.  Her name was Mrs. Argue and she is legally  blind.  She carries a special stick so she knows what is in front of her.  Mrs Argue read us a book called the "smooch". She wrote that book and she drew the pictures.  She gave us each a bookmark to take home and a coloring page that we are working on at school.
She showed us how she uses a special machine to colour and draw.  The machine lets her zoom in and out.  Her machine looked like a TV with a camera.  Her machine could also change colours.  We got to ask her lots of questions
We also did a taste test today we know our tongue tastes  different flavours on different parts of our tongue.  We tried bitter chocolate, sweet smarties, salty pretzels and sour lemons.

Trickster Performance

Today had our first Trickster performance and we got to watch all of the other classes.  Some parent came today and some parents will come tonight.  In the trickster show we wore multi colored shirts.  Some kids in Grade 4/5 filled our buckets by telling us we did an awesome job.
This morning we change our morning meeting and we did a center instead of our regular morning work.  We read a Mo Willems book about a pigeon that did not want to go to sleep.  He kept telling us he was not tired but at the end of the book he was sleeping.

Our last Trickster practice!

Today we had 2 Trickster practices.  We had one in the morning where we practiced our play and we also watched a video to see what our parents see and to help us each set a goal for our next practice.  In the afternoon we went on the stage in the gym to practice our Trickster show for another class.  We also got to watch two other classes do their shows.  The lights are really bright on the stage so we can't see the audience tat is watching us.
This month we are reading Mo Willems books.  We read a book about a pigeon and a little duck today.  The little duck wanted a piece of the hot dog and at the end the pigeon finally gave him some.  We also read a book about a pigeon who wanted to drive a bus.
Today Ms. Mahan gave us all of our work in January and we picked our favourite to go in our frame in the wall.  We put all the rest of the work in our backpack with a note to take home.  We also got a note about Book Orders, Valentines Day, Carneval and 100 Day.

Magic Painting

Today we had a Trickster practice and we made a snake. When we got the snake together we followed out Trickster leader around and then we put it over him and we pretend it ate him. Tomorrow when we go to Trickster we are going to work on synergizing and remembering that everyone needs a turn to be first.
We did an art project today.  We used a white crayon to draw a Valentines Day picture and then we painted over it.  When we painted it the white crayon showed up like magic!
We also each picked a valentine that we made to send to another school as part of our valentine exchange with other schools in Canada.
We opened 2 new valentines and we found those provinces in the atlas and then we marked them on our map in the hall.

Trickster is Here!

We had an assembly for Trickster this morning and they made a play about Star Wars with us.  Someone in our class even got to be in it.  It was lots of fun.  We all get to have a part in the Trickster show and we will practice it a lot this week,
We got a Valentine from other schools today.  The one we got today from Swan River in Manitoba.  There community is different from ours because they have a ski hill in their town and their school mascot is a tiger.  They are the same as us because we both having farming around our towns and we both have lakes.
