Poems are Everywhere

poetry Today we learned how to make poems in places in the school or anywhere.  We made a poem about the gym and the library. We watched a video about how people use graphs to count animals in real life.  We practiced putting information into a pictograph and reading a pictograph by ourselves .  We are getting pretty good at it.
Today we started our dance unit with Miss Nicky and she taught us some stretches and some spins.  We will get our song and learn our dance on Monday.  It is still a surprise.
We got a book order today it is due on Thursday so we can get the books back by Easter.

Pictograph

counting IIII (cc)
In math we learned about pictographs.  We learned that the key is very important in a pictograph.  it tells us how much each picture is worth.  In one pictograph we looked at one picture of a dog was equal to 2 dogs and a half dog was equal to one.  The key can change so we have to pay close attention to it!
We practiced doing tallies today.  We know that when you get to 5 you put the line across and then you start a new group at 6.    In science we learned that cups with lids will not evaporate very much and cups without lids will evaporate a lot.   We learned a new dance in gym called YMCA.  We also did a dance called the chicken dance.

Why do things float?

Today we watched a video about why things float or sink we learned that when things have stuff in them they usually sink but when they are full of air they usually float. On Wednesday we are going to bring a superhero to school.  If it floats we are going to add things to it to make it sink if it sinks we are going to try to make it float.

Today we got some new word work for the week.  Some of us are doing things about following directions and some of us are doing it about vowel sounds. We have all week to work on it.
Some of us were having troubles with the short i or short e sounds so we did some activities and practiced pringting words with those sounds for practice.
Miss Nicki starts dance on Friday and we are all very excited.

Oil and Water

oil and water.
Today we had Zones and we talked about strategies that help us self regulate like giving someone a hug, butterfly hugs and fidget toys.   They also showed us some sensory things that can help us calm down.  Mrs. Kellog said she would make a box of stuff like for our classroom if we want it.  We made our own toolbox out of paper and then we started talking about some tool that we can use to calm down to put in it.
We did a painting with oil and water colour paint.  We learned that oil and water do not mix. We could pull the paint through the oil and it was like magic because it looked like it  disappeared in the oil and then came out on the other side.  We could really see the surface tension of the water.

Counting on a Number Line

Frosty
Today we watched a video about water and it taught us that frost is forms when water vapor freezes that it turns into ice.  We looked at our cups in our classroom and the ones with no lids have had evaporation and the ones with lids have not.
Today we colored the scoops of ice cream the right colour using the words first second, third, etc.
We made a long number line from 0-100 and practiced skip counting by 2.5 and 10 both frontwards and backwards using a number line to help us.  Some could even do it without a number line.
We talked about important people in Iqaluit, Saskatoon and Meteghan.  The important person in Iqaluit helped the Inuit people get thier original names back instead of numbers.   We also talked about ch and sh sounds and then looked for words that had those letter in our books.
Our first book order and leprechaun trap came back to school today too!

Acadian Culture

Acadian Grunge Flag
Today we did an art project where we drew shamrocks and then blended light and dark colors with chalk pastels.  The grade 2's made a maze with odd or even numbers.  When we were done you could follow the red all the way from the start to the end.  The grade 1's made a maze by skip counting by 10s and 5's.
We coloured the Acadian flag and we learned that the sea and speaking french are important to the Acadian people.

Wednesday 8 March 2017

Nunavut Flag

Today we colored Nunavut flag the right colors.  There is an inusuk and the northern star on the flag because those are important to the Inuit people. .
Today we practiced odd and even numbers. We played a game and did some coloring and watched a video about  odd and even numbers.  We know odd number end with 1,3,5,7 and 9 and even numbers end with 0,2,4,6 and 8.

New Home Reading!

Alberta Grunge Flag In the morning we coloured the Alberta flag.  In our flag there are some things that are important to Alberta like the mountains and wheat fields.
Today in math we played a game called dominating dice.  We rolled 2 dice and then we added them together.    If the answer was odd we coloured the number on the odd side and if it was even we coloured it on the even side.
We got a new home reading folder today please ask us to show it to you.

Surface Tension

Surface Tension Today in Science, we did some experiments with water to show surface tension.  We used containers, droppers, wax paper and a knife.  We found out that we couldn't cut a drop in 2 and we could add more drops even when the container looked full.  We used scooters in gym before we played "Everyone It" tag.  We counted by 2s and learned about odd and even numbers.

Water Everywhere

Water
Today we watched a video about water.  We learned that if you leave a cup of water by a window it will get lower because the water is evaporating.  The water vapor goes to the clouds and when there gets to be too much it rains.  Condensation is what makes clouds.  If water was not on earth we would not exist.
Today we were practicing skip counting by 5. Please ask us to show you when we get home.
